Diary of A Spread Betting Punter June 2011
I’m absolutely thrilled for him, although I’ll be personally very sad to see him go. I’d love to be a fly on the wall in the airport when he lands… I’m convinced he would have used a picture of himself from 1971 as the ‘current photo’ in his application and the representative from the HKJC will be looking for some 25 year-old fresh-faced PR man wearing a flowery shirt!
Friday 1st June
Regular spread betting readers of this diary may remember I did my bollocks on a John Gosden-trained well-regarded newcomer called Ex Oriente a few weeks ago. Well, his flop at Newmarket that day was attributed to the soft ground and he was all set to get his preferred fast surface at Sandown this afternoon. He was backed from 8/1 into 4/1 and I managed to buy £20 at 13… surely he just had to be pointed in the right direction to win. Wrong. He didn’t settle at all and shook his head around like Paula Radcliffe for the first half mile before plugging on for 5th place. He is now my least favourite horse in training and firmly off my Christmas card list.
Men’s semi-finals day. I expected the top two to come good, so I bought £20 of Nadal’s set supremacy over Murray and the same for Djokovic over Tsonga, both at 9. Murray had me slightly worried after the first set, but as expected the grumpy Scot (as opposed to the awesome Brit he might have been) soon choked. A total of £440 income from both matches.
Saturday 2nd June
I was pretty much level after two or three racing bets by the time the runners went down to the start for the Old Newton Cup at Haydock. I’m not after-timing here (as I’ve been accused of before by several Sporting Index clients I see at the races), but I really fancied Halicarnassus. I bought £20 of Mick Channon’s old-timer (the equine version of Wally Pyrah) at 10 on the index and he landed the spoils. I’m not going to say any more as I know the bulk of you only like reading about my losses. I was asked at Ascot by one client whether this diary could look ahead more, rather than just look back… well, you can follow me on Twitter @BillEsdaile and witness me doing my bollocks live if you so desire!
As I said, I thought Sharapova was looking good so was happy to buy at her supremacy over (or should that be ‘ova’?) Kvitova at 6 for £10. Here’s a loss you can relish – Kvitova won in two sets and I lost £260.
I still had David Haye’s fight to make my money back. There was no way Haye, giving away two stone, was going to KO Klitschko so I bought £10 of fight minutes at 22.5. It went the distance and I made £135. Not a bad day at all and my ego is certainly in better shape than Haye’s.
Sunday 3rd June
I had a hunch that Djokovic was going to bring his A-game to the Wimbledon final against Nadal so I decided to sell Nadal/Djokovic supremacy at 3 for £15. Making up for my shock-apova yesterday, for the first time ever, Djoko looked truly comfortable on grass – so comfortable that even had a nibble of the pristine green stuff – and earned me plenty of ‘green’ in the process.
A few miles away England’s cricketers were hyping themselves up to avenge a humiliating defeat to Sri Lanka in the 2nd ODI – I definitely didn’t expect Cook and co to slip up again so I bought £5 of their supremacy at 13. Unwise, as Sri Lanka inflicted a second painful defeat on their hosts. The Lankans’ victory with six wickets remaining cost me £235. My ODI series markets are looking precarious now. I had bought £5 of Pietersen runs at 195 – just 115 more to get from two matches then. My £5 sell of highest team score is currently looking good for all of £15 and highest individual score is costing me a minimum of £120. The total sixes bet is looking the best of the lot – I sold £10 at 26 – we’re currently on 11.
Flicking through the channels in the evening, I remembered I had sold £10 of Nick Watney’s finishing position in the AT&T National at 28 last week. He only went and won it! Nice news to go to bed on.
Monday 4th June
A non-betting day for me, but that’s not to say it was a non-sporting day. I played football. I must admit that I talk a much better game than I play (same is also true of golf, tennis, squash etc.) and my player performance would have probably made up minus figures. And, to boot, I can now barely walk.
Tuesday 5th June
After my little break I was scrabbling around for something to bet on today. My cycling knowledge is limited, so I passed over the Tour de France for the T20 and bought Nottinghamshire/Worcestershire at 16 for £10. I got the result right, but was slightly disappointed at the 10 run margin of victory and a subsequent loss of £60.
Wednesday 6th June
The 4th ODI later and SL can’t possibly make it three in a row. I’m buying England’s supremacy at 10.
Looking ahead (but not looking forward) to the end of the week and I’m going to see Take That on Friday. Obviously it’s my dear wife’s thing and I’m happy to hum along to a bit of Back For Good as she loves them, but the tragedy is that the Pet Shop Boys are supporting. Something tells me we might get a bit lost and hit a fair bit of traffic on the way to the venue. I’ll also be backing Aussie raider Star Witness to win the July Cup on Saturday. As Gary and Robbie and the others once sang, ‘Could It Be Magic’?!
